Tutorial 1: Making a pedestal
Part 3:
Were going to join the pieces in this final part. Nothing fancy.
Move the pillar to layer one by selecting it and pressing 'm'. Scale and
move the parts so they align. You should get this.
Move around a bit in 3d space until you see the surface where you are going
to join the pieces. We want to remove the faces here because it messes up
the subsurf if we don't. Select the two indicated verts and remove the edge.
To make things easier we can hide all but the essential verts of the pillar.
Do this by selecting those you want to hide and press 'h'. The see them
again press 'alt+h'.
Now in order to join smoothly we must add some verts around the edges of the
two objects in order for them to match. We start by using the knife tool to
cut along the middle of the scrollwork from topview.
Do two more cuts to the pedestal part.
Select the verts showed in the image above. Go to top view and extrude.
Right click once then press 'alt+s' to shrink the selected band abit. It
should look like this.
Delete the edges shown in this pic.
Do a cut in the middle of the new...inward thingy...just look at the pic.
Now its a simple matter to select four vertices at a time and creating new
faces thus joining the two parts.
Select the verteces indicated in pic below and delete them.
Now select the scrollwork and spin dup it. Make sure the cursor is in the
center.
This is what you get. Now select all vertices and remove doubles. Nice.
But...if you look closely you may se some places where it didn't line up.
No problem. Select the verteces that should have joined and press 'alt+m'.
Choose at center and ##insert sissy french word here :)## !
Do this all the way around and youre done.
With some further extrusion and a disc on the top you're done! Slap on a
nice material, set up the scene and be amazed at your creation. Now you can
choose to do some ornaments and add details 'til you're sick to look at it
and get something like (link)this.
Or you can keep it simple like the one below. Hope this helped you somewhat.
Have fun!
