Medevi
Brunnsorkester (Medevi Spa Orchestera) is a brass sextet reinforced
with drums. This ensemble has given daily concerts for the summer spa-season
(presently 7 weeks) at Medevi for 130 years in a row!
Around 1850 this kind of ensemble became very popular because of the
newly invented brass instruments with valves that made it possible to
play a chromatic scale. That made it possible for a smaller ensemble
to play arrangements of music written for a larger orchestra. Medevi
Brunnsorkester was founded around1870. The unique thing about Medevi
Brunnsorkester is that it still plays in the same style as more than
100 years ago. The same concert schedule with three daily concerts plus
a short evening march with spa guests are still kept. The concerts are
given in the park of Medevi where the orchestra got its own music
pavillion to play in 1875.
Also the same kind of music is still played: marches, waltzes, polkas,
operetta, opera medleys, and popular classics from the era around 1850-1900.
Newer music as medleys from musicals and popular tunes has been arranged
to creatate variety for the audience and musicians. Medevi Brunnsorkester
has over a 1000 titles of music in its library!
Medevi Brunnsorkester still uses brass instruments that now are more
than 100 years old. The instruments is made by the Stockholm company,
Ahlberg & Ohlsson (1855 1950) and is the precestors to the
modern trumpet, horn, trombone and tuba. The instruments are: soprano
cornet, cornet, alto horn, tenor valve trombone, tenor horn, tuba and
drums. They have a mellow, soft timbre and the musicians are glad to
have found a couple of them still in playing condition.
The members of Medevi Brunnsorkester are professional musicians / music
teachers who all share the interest of historical brass music. Lars
Eric Andersson is the musical director and valve trombonist since 1969.
At that time he was the only young member so he inherited the musical
interpretation from 80 year old musicians. The orchestra gathers for
the seven weeks of spa season and also for occasional concerts winter
time in museums, music festivals and such.
To hear a concert with Medevi Brunnsorkester will move you more than
100 years back in time!
