Gunnel Mauritzson - singer
Gunnel Mauritzson is one of the foremost folk singers in Sweden.
She is a musician with the ability to express music and lyrics
in a new way, and she has sung with a number of the most
prominent musicians in Sweden within folkmusic and jazz. Her
musical roots are in folk music from Gotland (the island
situated in the Baltic sea outside the Swedish mainland), and
earlier she was for more then ten years a member of the folk
music group Gunnfjauns Kapell.
As a singer Gunnel works both in her own band Gunnel
Mauritzson Band, the group Nåra and in projects as church
masses and big band conserts. She is often invited to perform
as a soloist with the repertoar from old Swedish church hymns
to jazz standards.
Gunnel is also a composer of new songs and tunes, often build
upon the style of traditional folk music. And with the ear of
a contemporary musician she brings in new elements such as new
lyrics, old poems, wordless singing, jazzimprovisation, world
music and so on.
For her work she has been awarded with several scholarships
amongst others from SKAP (Swedish Composers of Popular Music)
2001, Stockholm county council 2003, and the Scholarship of
Lars Gullin 2002.
