Format of tables, example from 1998 - 1999 Premier League (with headers inserted)
_____HOME________ _____AWAY_______ _________TOTAL____________
w d l f a w d l f a pl w d l f a pts
Manchester United 14 4 1 45 - 18 8 9 2 35 - 19 38 22 13 3 80 - 37 79
Arsenal 14 5 0 34 - 5 8 7 4 25 - 12 38 22 12 4 59 - 17 78
......
Abbreviations in the header:
w:won d:draw l:lost f:goals for a:goals against pl:matches played pts:points
ALL tables are sorted: first by points, and if two teams have the same points,
secondly by goal difference.
In lower divisions of the league that secondary sorting should be by goals
scored. Having two sets of rules for sorting league tables
seems very Brittish, but is not implemented in this version.
Another problem is penalties - points deductions. Like Middlesbrough's three
points deduction in the season 1996 - 1997 for failing to field team. All tables here are made on the fly, and the tricky penalties are not implemented.
Happily they are quite few.
