SWEDISH MILITARY POSTAL HISTORY SOCIETY, SMPS

Introduction

Established in 1975, The Swedish Military Postal History Society, abbreviated SMPS, was formed to bring together the many collectors interested in Swedish military post from 1631, when the first field post office was opened, to the present day. The items collected include pre philatelic mail in war and peace, military letters, postcards and stationery, military postmarks, Swedish military mail to and from foreign countries (e.g. Swedish Volunteer's and Swedish UN-forces' mail), post from prisoner-of-war and interment camps, censorship and postal restrictions, foreign field post in Sweden etc. We also study postmarks, military cachets and postal rates.

Since its formation the Society has achieved steady growth with 75 members mostly in Sweden but also in other countries.

What does SMPS do for its members?

The SMPS tries to support collectors of mail within the various areas mentioned above. We count among our members experts in most of these areas, but especially collectors of mail connected with the two world wars (covers, postcards and military reply stamps, prisoner-of-war letters, letters from internment camps, Red Cross and censored letters) and collectors of UN-forces' mail are prepared to share their experience.

The Society encourages members with similar interests to pool their knowledge and supports studies and research in their fields for publication later on in our semi-annual review, The Military Postal Journal (MPT). Members are invited to report on new items and supply information of general or current interest. Newspaper cuttings, especially from local newspapers, dealing with subjects connected with our activities, are highly appreciated for further publication. Our journal is published in Swedish with occasional summaries in English. Your experiences, thoughts, ideas and suggestions in collecting Swedish military postal history are solicited.

Meetings. Membership advantages

Meetings are held once a month in Stockholm, on the first Wednesday of each month (except July and August). Our meeting venue is the Post museum in Lilla Nygatan 6 in the Old Town Stockholm, and meetings begin at 6,30 p.m. At our meetings we present various aspects and areas of our collecting and show interesting items acquired. Sometimes lecturers are invited and study visits made. Even all day meetings are held.

Our semi-annual Journal, the MPT, contains numerous articles on various subjects, details of new discoveries, members’ queries etc. Members have access to the extensive library at the Postal Museum, where there is also a photocopy service.

Why not join the SMPS, a society run by collectors for the benefit of collectors? If you are interested in Swedish military postal history it is a must to join the society.

What is the cost?

The annual subscription, is SEK 300.- to be paid to our account No. IBAN = SE42 9500 0099 6034 0027 803, BIC = NDEASESS, Non-European members pay USD 36,00  which is paid cash in bank notes. You are advised to send the subscription by registered post. Membership includes two issues of the MPT.
