Ellora

Ellora (or Elura - but not Ellore, which is in Andhra Pradesh) is a place in central India in the state of Maharashtra. Here you can find some of India's most famous cave temples. The most spectacular is the Kailasanatha temple, a temple devoted to Shiva (about 90 x 50 m) cut out of the more than 35 m high cliff. The temple was made in the end of the 800th century. In total there are 34 temples in the area with an origin from about 350 - 1200 AD. The oldest are buddhist, the hindu temples like Kailasanatha are younger, and latest are the jain temples.

We did not have the opportunity to see Ellora (at least no yet). Michel Polizzi in Paris let us use his picture. Here you can find more nice pictures from Ellora by Michel.

Here is a link with information about the inscriptions in the temples.
