Basset Hound belongs to FCI group 6, Hounds.

The breed was developed in England during the 19th century .English bloodhound and French bassets ( primarily the Basset Artesien Normand) was used and the purpose was to create a slow hound with excellent scenting abilities. The Basset hound was used primarily in packs and this is probably one of the reason why they still love the company of other dogs. For the complete FCI standard, please contact SKK.

The first Basset hound came to Sweden in the 1950's. Most hounds spend their life as companions or showdogs but there are still one or two kennels that breed dogs for hunting. Although not as pack dogs since this type of hunt is prohibited in Sweden. Quite a few imports has been made, mostly from England but lately even from the Netherlands. 42 Basset hound breeders where registered in Sweden in 1999.
