EARLY WHALING/SEALING: 1830 Entire letter
(postmarked NEW YORK APR.30 and FREE) sent by the infamous whaling/sealing Captain Charles H Barnard (author of
the book "Marooned – Being a Narrative of the Sufferings and
Adventures of Captain Charles H Barnard, Embracing an Account of the Seizure
of his Vessel at the Falkland Islands, &c, 1812-1816", first
published in 1829. This fascinating book is generally available in modern
reprints), from New York to US Senator Charles Dudley, Washington, asking the
Senator to talk to the President about giving Barnard a Customs Inspector job
in New York harbour. Captain Barnard was marooned on NEW ISLAND, FALKLAND
ISLANDS for a year or more during his 1812-1816 whaling/sealing journey in
the brig "Nanina". Outstanding and important piece of nautical
history and believed to be the only example of Captain Barnards signature |

1882 cover to Santiago, Chile, with letter written by Bishop Stirling
(concerning the Bible Society of Santiago, dated "Stanley
24/3/1882" and signed "Waite H Falkland Islands"), postmarked FALKLAND ISLANDS
MR.25.1882 (F.1) and with arrival marking Santiago 8.ABR.82 . The cover bears
a QV 4d. stamp (1879 printing, no wmk, SH2) cancelled with the F I steel
obliterator (Ob.1/78). Sadly the original stamp has been removed from the
cover and has been replaced with a similar 1879 4d., but it is still the only
known example of this stamp used to a foreign country, and it is also an
important historical item full of charm. (If the original stamp had been
present this cover would have been worth £10,000+) |

Dear Greta. With our last mail for a long time I am sending a small greeting
to you, Allan and the boys. Your brother Otto". The card bears a QV 1d.
stamp tied by a little unclear AP.7.02 (F.4B) cds and arrival cdss of 8-10/5
1902. It has been claimed that the stamp does not belong to the card and
therefore the card is offered as such at a low estimate. (If the stamp does

expedition item sent from the Antarctic |

1916 "OPENED BY CENSOR 837" and
"OPENED BY CENSOR 286", two censor labels on double censored cover
from Sweden to HUSVIK STATION, SOUTH GEORGIA, via Buenos Aires, with two
Swedish 10öre stamps tied by Stockholm 16.10.16 cds, addressed to Seaman Kurt
Liljeqvist, Ship Sophie (of Larvik), written by his mother. Manuscript note
in red across the front "RETURN, SHIP HAS SUNK", and therefore
re-directed to Denmark and finally Norway. Transit markings Buenos Aires
6/3/1917, Aarhus 7/5/1917, Kristiansand 4/10/1917. Some edge faults incl a
torn corner but a well travelled cover with a fantastic story (see the
following lot for the same correspondence). Opened out for display. Sophie, a
Norwegian sailing ship of 1621 tons under Captain Holst with a crew of 20,
arrived in South Georgia on 31/10/1916 from Liverpool via Cardiff, and
departed on 13/12/1916 for Buenos Aires in ballast |

rigger Sophie and we will go from here to Cardiff and then to SOUTH GEORGIA,
which is located South of Buenos Aires, with a cargo of coal. South Georgia
is a whaling station and there we will pick up whaling oil and probably go to
Buenos Aires". 2) 1916 "CENSOR 156" and "CONTROLE POSTAL
MILITAIRE" labels on cover from Sweden to Liljeqvist, Barry Docks,
Cardiff, England (sic). But the ship had left so the cover was returned and
it has various cachets incl "REBUT, Non reclame". Interesting
