1952 mourning envelope (with Government House crest on flap) to Miss Madge Biggs, Public Library, with mourning letter (also with Government House crest and printed GOVERNMENT HOUSE, FALKLAND ISLANDS) written and signed by Miles Clifford. "11th/III My dear Madge, I only heard a few days ago that you have been (?still are) laid up with a bad leg. I am sorry to learn this and hope it will soon be better again. When it is, come + have tea with me. Yours sincerely, Miles Clifford". Although there is no year in the letter it is with all certainty 1952 since Clifford was Governor in 1946-54 and King George VI had died on 6 February 1952. The mourning stationery looks ancient and is probably from Queen Victoria's time. An exceptional item delivered by the Governor's chauffeur. Ex Biggs |
