About me

I think I was about 12 years old when I built my first model sailing boat. It was an Airfix kit of HMS Soveriegn and I was quite pleased with the result at the time.

I live on an Island in the Southern Archipelago off Gothenburg, Sweden. The Island's name is Styrsö which roughly translated to English means "Steer Island". This is not such a strange name as the Island lies on the outer edge of the Archipelago and was probably an important landmark for ships approaching the Swedish west coast.

Below is a picture of our village on the Island, Automobiles are not allowed except with special permission so it gives us a very peaceful environment. Almost all transport is done by boat, we have regular ferry-boats to the mainland every hour between 6 in the morning and 1 the next morning. Most of the Islanders are boat owners and use a boat as people on the mainland would use an automobile. For me this is a marvelous way to get about, although it can be rough and cold in the winter.

If you look to the left you can see the Statoil gas station for boats and smaller ships. I get great pleasure from watching the various vessels that come and go from our local gas station. I live in the grey house second from the left of the picture. The house is 167 years old and the timber is original, probably built from ships timber that is why it has lasted so long.
