From x93chew@wmich.edu Sun Nov 13 18:33:31 1994 From: x93chew@wmich.edu Newsgroups: rec.photo.help Subject: Canon EOS numbers/names explained (incl. feature differences) Date: 11 Nov 94 02:34:23 EDT Organization: Western Michigan University Once again, the list showing the differences between the numerous US/non-US models. Its closer to complete, let me know if something is amiss. I also need the differences between the EOS-10s (US) and EOS-10 (non-US) if you know of any. This listing isn't exhaustive of the EOS lineup though (missing are the EOS-600 series, older Rebels/1000 and EOS-800/700 series). ==================================== EOS-1 ================================= EOS-1 (US) EOS-1 (non-US) ---------- -------------- No differences. =============================== EOS-A2/A2E/5/5QD =========================== EOS-A2/A2E (US) EOS-5/5QD (non-US) --------------- -------------- A2 has no Eye Controlled Focus A2E has Eye Controlled Focus EOS-5 has Eye Controlled Focus Has no AF - in focus beeper Has AF - in focus beeper (cancellable) A2 has diopter correction A2E doesn't have diopter correction EOS-5 doesn't have diopter corr. Built-in flash does not pop up Built-in flash pops up automatically automatically when needed in Green Zone, Portrait & Close-up modes Manual metering <+|-> By +2 to -2 stops scale in 1/2 stops Has no dateback version 5QD has dateback Notes:- I have the 5QD bought grey market in the US, and specifically for the manual metering scale. If you're wondering about getting the EOS-5 grey market in the US, your best bet would be B&H Photo as they provide a backup one-year warranty in case Canon doesn't honor the warranty. To date, Canon reps have said that Canon USA will repair grey market items under warranty, just that it needs to be sent directly to a Canon Service Facility instead of an authorized repair facility. Bear in mind that they have no legal obligation to honor the warranty though. =============================== EOS 10s/10 ================================= EOS 10s (US) EOS 10 ------------ ------ Has no AF - in focus beeper Has AF - in focus beeper (cancellable) Are there any other differences? ======================= EOS Elan/Elan QD?/100/100QD ======================== EOS Elan (US) EOS-100/100QD (non-US) ------------- ---------------------- Has no AF - in focus beeper Has AF - in focus beeper (cancellable) Built-in flash does not pop up Built-in flash pops up automatically automatically when needed in Green Zone, Portrait & Close-up modes Manual metering <+|-> <+|-> There is a mention by someone about an EOS-100P (Panorama) in Japan that has +2 to -2 stops scale in 1/2 stops (now I have more mentions, see notes below) Is there an Elan QD version? 100QD has dateback Notes:- 1) I've tried the 100 in Malaysia. No manual metering scale, flash does pop up automatically. Someone in UK has confirmed that the 100 there also does not have manual metering scale. US Elan is definitely <+|->. A 100 from Australia has no scale, another from Greece has scale. I'm guessing now that probably Canon has started to standardize with the EOS-5 and all newer EOS-100 cameras have the manual exposure scale? 2) I don't know anything about the 100P's availability outside Japan, and only know of its existence because someone posted about it and the poster was in Japan. 3) Some details taken from Hove EOS Elan/100 guidebook. ===================== EOS Rebel X/XS/XS QD and EOS-500 ===================== Rebel X/XS/XS QD (US) EOS-500 (non-US) --------------------- ---------------- X has no built-in flash, XS does EOS-500 has built-in flash (no non-flash model?)
