"Crazy & Mixed Up"
You want to know why her nickname was
"Sassy"? Listen to this. This is the essential Ms.Vaughan,
a self-produced, small-combo session from 1982, featuring Joe
Pass on guitar. Vaughan picked the musicians, she picked the
songs, and the result is Sassy at Sarah's purest--undiluted by
slick orchestrations or studio enhancements. The atmosphere is
loose and lively, Vaughan's voice at its ripest--and she's recorded
nice and close so you can almost feel the warmth of her breath
coming through the speakers. Her scatting scatters "Autumn
Leaves" like a whirlwind, and on my favorite track ("In
Love in Vain") she stretches and bends the melody as if
it were saltwater taffy. --Jim Emerson |

Crazy is a perfect album. Technically, the recording is shimmering.
Sarah's voice is right where it should be on the stage, and the
players are recorded accurately and warmly. The song selection
is also well thought out. Of the dozens I've heard, the opening
song is by far the best cover of "I Didn't Know What Time
It Is". The scat performance of "Autumn Leaves"
shows off Sarah's incredible range on a song so well-covered
that its a nice break to not hear the words. "That's All"
is my pick of the album. "The Island" is also wonderful.Caveat
emptor -- the album is only thirty-two minutes long -- but don't
let that stop you. Every minute is great, and you'll find yourself
listening to this one over and over. |
