"Gotta Tell You" (Extra
Tracks)
Following the demise of B*Witched, the
Irish pop world was looking for a new young female to step into
the fray. Enter Mumba, with her sparkling debut single "Gotta
Tell You," which went straight to the upper echelons of
the U.K. pop charts in the summer of 2000. Her debut album of
the same name opens with that track, swiftly followed by her
second single, "Body II Body" which came with David
Bowie's seal of approval--he allowed her to heavily sample "Ashes
to Ashes" for its central loop. The rest of the material
is an even mix of sweet R&B and upbeat infectious pop, which
beguile and enchant the listener. Gotta Tell You is an extremely
confident debut, closing as it does with a rousing cover of the
Motown standard "Signed, Sealed, Delivered"--a feat
few girls Samantha Mumba's age could carry off with such aplomb.
Debut albums rarely come this consummate. --Helen Marquis |

Reviewer: Ian Creamer from Dublin,Ireland
Louis Walsh seems to have the midas
touch when it comes to uncovering new popstars.First we had Boyzone
and Ronan Keating, then we had Westlife and now of course added
to that list is Mumba. She's had 3 very big hits on this side
of the Atlantic and now she set to make her debut on the silver
screen. This young Dubliner is set to be a major star in the future. This
c.d. sees her singing a collection of well crafted pop songs.Mostly
pop,but it's also quite funky and soulful-she certainly has a
voice and a presence to make this quite a good c.d. in it's own
particular genre. They have chosen the Swedish team that has written
for Britney and The Backstreet Boys to write the vast majority
of these songs. The 3 best songs are the first 3 hits."Gotta
Tell You" has a nice funky cutting edge to it and a very
catchy chorus."Body To Body" tastefully uses the David
Bowie sample of Ashes To Ashes and this provided her second hit.The
third hit and most obviously commercial song on the c.d. is "Always
Come Back To Your Love"-this is total Euro-Pop.There are
plenty of other potential hits on this c.d..Song 5 "Lately"
has a gospel feel to it,which reminds me of the first All Saints
hit-Never Ever. She sings at her deepest and funkiest on song
6 which sounds like it could have been written by Stevie Wonder, especially
with the brass arrangements. The other notable effort is Lose
You Again-which captures the listeners attention by starting
off with the chorus-pure R/B pop. |
