Cesaria Evora

"Cabo Verde"

Cesaria Evora sings morna, a cool mix of blues, jazz, and Portuguese folk that is the national passion of Cape Verde. It's usually played on caviquinhos and guitars, sometimes piano, an occasional horn, with light touches of percussion. She has a whiskey-and-cigarettes voice, a mournful, worldly style that has become what most folks think of when they say morna. Cabo Verde is Cesaria Evora's second U.S. release, and it doesn't hit the high point of Miss Perfumado. It's a little heavier in the production and her voice not as powerful as in the past. But hers is still a magnificent voice, and if you have other Evora recordings, you'll want this one too. --Louis Gibson

Cesaria combines a mellow voice with a confident, easy style of delivery. She is probably one of the best singers in the world today and on all of the recordings I have heard she is mercifully free of the overproduction that has spoiled the recordings of some great performers. Evora is one of the best voices being recorded today. Buy any of her current recordings before some record exec genius decides to put her into an echo chamber and makes her sound like the lowing of a thousand dying cattle as has been done to Enya.

I bought this CD at amazon because it was recommended as Sunday morning music and I liked the samples. Since I have the CD I have listened to it at least once a day and I just love it. I am looking forward to discovering her other albums. Listening to her just makes me feel happy, it is amazing.

My Cape Verdean sister-in-law introduced me to Cesaria; this album was the first I had seen of hers and I've been hooked ever since. The haunting melodies, the stirring guitars, and Cesaria's lilting voice makes me heady and covers me with goose bumps. The most perfect album for a rainy day.....
