"Heart And Soul"

Vonda Shepard

It's got to be a bit strange for Vonda Shepard. This is her album--she sings and writes the songs--and yet she takes second billing to the TV show that features her as the singer in the unnamed bar. Granted, Shepard had released many solo albums on her own before Ally made her a known commodity, and the songs here are geared to mirror Ms. McBeal's many moods. Here, she is helped out by an impressive cast. Vonda Shepard's backing band includes drummer Pete Thomas, bassist Davey Faragher , and guitarist Val McCallum, andShepard's guest vocalists include the Reverend Al Green for a stunning duet on Lulu's To Sir, with Love," and the Indigo Girls' Emily Saliers on "Baby, Don't You Break My Heart Slow." Rounding out the anthemic originals are covers of Don McLean's "Vincent," Peter & Gordon's "World Without Love," and the Isley Brothers' "This Old Heart of Mine" --Rob O'Connor

"Heart And Soul"

Reviewer: Charlene Lydon from Ireland
Hi, about a week after I first litened to this album, Shepard came to Ireland and I just HAD to see her. I've had the first Ally CD for about a year and listen to it all the time. After seeing her live, however, I completely idolise this woman. This CD is wonderful. Her vocals are stunning, the backing music funky, and the songs inspiring. This is an album for people like me who love to crank it up real loud and sing along at the top of my voice. You get such a kick out of soulful songs like "Sweet Inspiration" and "To Sir With Love", and there are few single people who can't identify with the beautifully simple and heartfelt "I Know Him By Heart". I hope she soons comes out of the Ally McBeal shadow and is recognised for her own wowing talent.
