"Blue"
Sounding remarkably like
Patsy Cline, Rimes's voice slices into each song like a hot knife
through butter. At the age of 13, Rimes became country's brightest
new star upon the release of this impressive debut. Her balanced
blend of traditional and new country owes as much to Cline as
it does 1990s' style. "Cattle Call," a duet with the
legendary Eddy Arnold, is just one of the many highlights on
this album. Attention is focused on Rimes's distinctive booming
vocals, as opposed to some snappy chops--musically, it all sounds
familiar, like you have heard this before. Still, there are moments
where you feel this could not be the voice of a child. As she
matures, so will her feelings and presumably her songs. --Paula

I rarely listen to country music
but when I first heard LeAnn sing, the first thing that shot
through my mind was WOW! Where the hell did those vocals come
from? True, some people may not like her singing, but you have
to admit, for a teenager, it's pretty damn good (when you compare
her to teens like Hanson). I think the best song if One Way Ticket.
It's incrediably moving to think somebody is singing about something
positive since all you hear now is break-up songs about romance
gone bad. Another good song is Light In Your Eyes. I'm not in
any way religous but this song struck me as beautiful. It was
very sincerely written and sung. I had the opportunity to see
her in concert and all I can say is if you like the disc, run
like hell to the nearst ticket booth. She's totally amazing in
concert. At the end Leann sang I Will Always Love You and if
you think Whitney Housten is the only one who can reach those
high notes (and not have it shatter glass) then are you in for
a surprise. Buy the CD. The music's OK, Leann's singing's great,
so all in all, it's a good investment. |
