This is first rate. A first class performance from a talented, down-to-earth lady, unjustly shunted into the background of Canadian music by no-talents like Shania Twain and people like her who have taken over music with plastic personas and third rate material. Not only does Patricia have this against her, but she is just one of the increasing many recording artists in Canada who are being booted off their major label for not registering significant sales. If you don't sell at least past Gold in Canada, you're toast. Despite a rigorous touring schedule and major support from CMT in Canada, Patricia Conroy has yet to break through in the United States. This album was her calling card and boy what a calling card it is. This is not a country recording in the truest sense of the word. Patricia and producers Mike Wanchic and Justin Niebank created a sound that borrows from roots/rockabilly/country/rock that ultimately comes off as urban country at its best. Linda Ronstadt comes immediately to mind, as she too tightroped her way across those same sounds as well. The most distinctive sound is Patricia's voice - confident, deep and sultry. The musicianship is solid. The songwriting is top notch - Kostas, Matraca Berg, Jennifer Kimball, Lyle Lovett, Tony Arata and Patricia Conroy herself. The centrepiece of this recording is also the leadoff track - the confident, bluesy rocker "What Else Can I Do", superbly sung, simply written. The first-rate material keeps coming with Lovett's "You Can't Resist It"; the dark, thundering "Somebody's Leavin'"; Conroy's great "I Don't Wanna Be The One" and the party song "Keep Me Rockin'" - all major hits in Canada. This is a career album from a very talented performer. Conroy should feel very proud of this achievement. She has continued to release fine material, now as an independent artist, free of the pressure of a major's demands. When the day is done, real talent like this will always overshadow banal tripe. |
