"Night To Remember"
Before scoring his own hits, Joe Diffie
was a sought-after demo singer. In part, that was because he
has a fantastic voice but also because he can sound like anybody.
Without a distinctive voice, though, he winds up being only as
good as his songs, which are pretty good here, although too often
they're swallowed by arena-sized arrangements at odds with their
intimate content. The desperate "Are We Even Yet,"
however, balances loud and quiet just right, and on an old-school
Harlan Howard ballad called "Don't Our Love Look Natural,"
Joe Diffie sounds like he's preparing a demo for the next Gene
Watson single--wonderful, in other words, but still not distinctively
Diffie. --David Cantwell |
Customer review from Amazon
Reviewer: A music fan
A couple of points I would like to make. First, the reviewer
for Amazon is grossly misinformed if he thinks Joe Diffie doesn't
have a distinctive voice. Diffie is one of the more distinctive
voices on country radio. Second, This album is a quality piece
of work, however, I am somewhat disappointed by the lack of just
FUN songs. After Joe's first few albums (through 3rd Rock), Joe
has blanded out somewhat. Some of Joe Diffie's most loved and
sung songs are those that are just flat out fun. For example;
John Deere Green, Pick-up Man, and 3rd Rock from the Sun. This
album really doesen't have any of these, but Joe has picked some
quality songs nonetheless. If Joe had to do a serious album,
I must say he did an excellent job on this one. Here's to hopeing
that Joe puts a couple of fun songs on his next album. |
