DUBROVNIK
THE PEARL OF CROATIAN TOURISM

For the tourists, culture lovers, artists, but also for the people of all other walks of life, Dubrovnik has always been the treasury of architectural and cultural wealth. Therefore the walls and the fortress of the old town which is included in the UNESCO list of cultural heritage, too are every tour operator's inexhaustible source of inspiration.
So, in addition to the already traditional sight- seeing activities including the cultural landmarks of the city, the whole-day and half-a-day trips to Konavle and Cavtat, Cilipi, to the river Neretva delta, Trsteno and Ston, or to the island Lopud, we recommend a visit to the prince who is obliged to receive his guests at the Rector's Palace. This encounter which has been arranged in organisation of the Atlas travel agency brings, for a brief moment, the tourists back to the times of the glorious Republic of Dubrovnik and to the golden times of the Renaissance Ragusa (Dubrovnik). In the tour around the Rector's palace the guests will attend a rehearsal of the costumed performers of the Renaissance music, and afterwards become introduced to the prince by his merry servant. This ceremonial is an excellent supplement to the overall image of the city, which once used to maintain contacts with numerous countries of the world.
The guests can find equally interesting a visit to the island of Mljet, yet another of the National parks in Croatia, or to the island Korcula where the tourists simply must see the knightly game called moreska which portrays the time of continuous wars on the Mediterranean. This is the only dance of its kind in the area of the Mediterranean countries, preserved in its original form, in which thirty dancers wage a fierce struggle for bula - (the fiancée in this particular story). Therefore, when you visit Korcula, be sure not to miss an opportunity to take pleasure in this truly unique dance, which at moments can get even dangerous for the dancers.

The area of Hrvatsko zagorje is ideal for all devotees of antiquities and culture, or for those who long to set out into romantic locations. This is the area where, on very short distances, you can find majestic castles or splendid old manors - kurije - which have for centuries been built here by Croatian noblemen's families of Draskovic, Frankopan, Zrinski and so on. Therefore everybody who gets an opportunity to see the scenery of Hrvatsko zagorje must go for an excursion into a mediaeval castle Veliki Tabor, which is a highly protected monument with rich ethnographic collection, swordsmen show- room, the Bauer's permanent collection and the art gallery of Duro Prejc.
In the vicinity of the Baroque town Varazdin there is also an unavoidable castle of Trakoscan, raised in the 16th century and renovated in the period of historicism in the 19th century, set on a hill in the middle of a park above the lake.
Also connected with Hrvatsko zagorje is the site of the primitive man in Krapina, only 50 kilometres from Zagreb, as well as numerous monasteries and churches, and the sanctuary of Mother of God in Marija Bistrica. This locality is a real treasury of old and precious monuments, which fact testifies that cultural heritage has been established and developed for many centuries in these parts. The area is also well- known for rich curative springs of thermal waters and for picturesque atmosphere of vineyards on the hills of Zagorje.

MEDJUGORJE - THE PLACE
WHERE OUR LADY APPEARED

Previous · Top
All the believers who spend their summer holidays on the Adriatic simply must visit the sanctuary of Medjugorje, situated in the south of Croatia, in the neighbouring state of Bosnia and Herzegovina, about some 150 kilometres away from the famous tourist centres of Split and Dubrovnik. Medugorje has recently become one of the most prominent and most visited pilgrims' venues in the Catholic world. In the last fifteen years this holy place has drawn more than 20 millions of pilgrims from all over the world. The hill Crnica, better known as the Hill of appearance today, is where the Lady appeared for the first time on June 24, 1981. In fear of this first appearance the witnesses ran away, but the following day already, having been summoned by the Lady they returned to the Hill where they spoke and prayed with her for the first time. Therefore this day, June 25, has been celebrated as the anniversary of the Queen of peace, as the Lady introduced herself.
A steep path leads to the place of the appe- arance, which has become easily discernible under the footsteps of myriads of pilgrims treading upon it. The witnesses, to whom the Lady appears today, too, pass on the message of peace to other people. Countless pilgrims absorbed in prayer, song and contemplation can be found on the place of the appearance around-the-clock. Believers can also take part in the programme of prayers organised in the shrine.
Medjugorje
In the church of Medjugorje, which in 1981 has become the gathering place of millions of believers, the masses are served on German, Italian, English and French languages apart from Croatian. The pilgrimage is undertaken to the hill of Krizevac, too, where a huge cross is erected. This pilgrimage is done in veneration of the Way of the Cross.
Croatian tourist agencies organise excursions to Medjugorje for the tourists who spend their summer in the central or southern Dalmatia. Thus the bus lines run from Split every morning and afternoon, departing from the main busstation in Split. It is possible to leave for Medjugorje in the morning and to return in the evening. Private accommodation for visitors of Medjugorje is also arranged. One-day trips with expert guides are organised from Makarska, too, which is 75 kilometres away from Medjugorje. Every Saturday the buses leave from Dubrovnik on a day's outing.
Medjugorje
The Association of guides renders the services of accompaniment and guiding the groups of foreign tourists, in all the languages of the world.
For all other information we recommend you to inquire at the tourist associations or the tourist agencies in your tourist destinations.
