| Comments; | The 1939 version is with
recitation from Rolland's Jean Christoph before the
movements. There is a fugue in the 1939 & 1943
Scherzo third movement. The noun in the Swedish title kan also be "tidsåldrarna" (Grove 1980), "mansåldrarna" (Åhlén in Caprice 21508) or "levnadsåldrarna". When first introduced (Röster i radio No 50 1939) the piece was called De fyra livsåldrarna, Symfonisk musik av Hilding Rosenberg med text ur Romain Rollands roman Jean-Christoph (The four ages of man, Symphonic music by Hilding Rosenberg with text from Romain Rolland's novel Jean-Christoph). According to Bo Wallner (1995, quoted in Björn Martinson's dissertation "Hilding Rosenbergs apokalyps") this version with recitation was only performed twice. I've only seen the opusnumber mentioned on the Finlandia-recording. |
