Hi! This site is devoted to the life and works of Hilding Rosenberg, the Swedish composer who lived 21 June 1892 to 19 May 1985. He was of the same generation as Martinu, Prokofiev, Honegger and Hindemith, but lived longer than they. In the twenties Hilding Rosenberg was one of those who introduced modernistic music to Sweden and tried to develope his own voice in that tradition. In the years around the second world war, his music became more involved with the ethical issues of its time and more neo-classically oriented. He was one of the great teachers of composition, with Karl-Birger Blomdahl, Ingvar Lidholm and Åke Hermanson among his pupils. In the late fifties he turned to his own brand of twelve-tone music, but always kept in mind that the melody is the most important element in music. Even in the sixties and seventies he developed his art with symphonies, chamber music and ballets.
On this site you'll find a detailed catalogue of his compositions, some smaller worklists, sorted alphabetically and genre-wise, a discography and a biography, dealing with the non-compositional activities in Rosenberg's life. I'll update the site with new information as it appears.
The worklists can be launched either from this index-page or from worklists.html. All other pages have links only to the site's "sections".
For the Rosenberg Top Ten-page I need your assistance: mail me your ten favourite Rosenberg pieces, your name and country and I'll publish it here. From the received lists I'll compile the main Top Ten-list (one point given irrespective of position on your list). My intention is that this will serve as a sort of "Young Person's Guide to Rosenberg".
How about some recordings of rare pieces? The late Riflessionis or Metamorfosi sinfoniches for instance! And why on earth are record companies sitting on unavailable recordings?

Let's round off with a
sentence from the memoirs of HR (p70, editor's translation), on the twenties; ...my music still caused vexation and there were plenty of occassions for that as I was indecently productive... And some more serious words from an interview 1962, (Nutida Musik), editor's translation: ...writing a symphony I try to gather all my musical and human experiences and give them a synthetic formulation. Many thanks to PB for the picture! |
