Part 7. February 2004

Suspension and exhaust

The car is high like a skyscraper and I have to get it down a bit. After a tip I buy a pair of Vw Transporter pick up suspension coil for a very small sum of money. Compare with the original coil to the left above. These are bolt on to all 1941-1960 Buick and will give you a 3” lowering in the rear. But 3” is a lot and I made a pair of 1” spacers to place under the coil. Finally I end up with a 2-1/2” lower rear end. In the front I cut off one turn on the coil and get 1” lower. Dropped spindles or/and airbags is the way to go in the future.

1” Coil spacers above. To the right you can see a 2-1/2” lowering in the rear end.

Take a closer look at the lowering. As you can see the full winter is over us here now.

Converting to dual exhaust!

Buick straight eight is an excellent engine to convert to dual exhaust. Just take a look at the left picture above. Cut the exhaust pipe where the blue arrow pointed and you have two-exit pipe for four cylinders each. Perfect for both breeding and sound. Check out the original “King size” muffler to the right above, it’s huge, compared to the beer can besides. Now I know why I cant hear when the car was running.

Now the dual exhaust is in place.
