Instructions for converting 1997-2000
model taillights to the 2001 model
.

Remove the comeplet cowls and remove the side shelf (tool and first aid box)

Pull the wiring harness off the taillight assembly.
Unscrew the tree mounting nuts and  remove the tails from the car.

See old mounting points (left) vs. the new (right)

Note: After changing the taillights it’s impossible to change Light bulbs
without taking the whole tail light assembly out.

To fix this problem you have to cut two holes in the body (se pic).

Protect the metal with Primer and Paint.

Now it’s time to rearrange the wiring in the harness.

Note: DO NOT connect the B5.5 lights to the B5 harness without reordering the wires first.
(If you already did, change the corresponding 5 Amp fuse for rear parking light)

There are 3 ways to do this:

1. Open up the harness to reordering the wires.

Take the paper clip and push it into the harness.

Push it as far as it’ll go and tug on the wire.
Rearrange the wires, using the following chart:

Four Brakelights ?

Note: If you what to have more Brakelights than a original B5.5 has, you only have to
bridge the upper to the lower light.

But this will cause a problem: when you turn on the fog lights, the electricity it will “leak” to the stoplights = All stoplights will be permanently on.

To fix this you need to put a 3 Amp Diode (1N5404) in between. The white ring against the foglight. But there will still be a minor problem: the foglight indicator on the dashboard will start every time you brake…
If you are willing to live with that, there are two ways to mount the diode:

1. Put the Diode in the connector (see pic)

2. Solder the diode as a bridge in the electrical control.
The white ring against the foglight. (see pic)

Install the new taillights.
The B5 tails have three mounting points, whereas the B5.5 tails have four.

The B5.5 tails use two of the same mounting holes (the outside ones).
The inside ones will need brackets to hold the tails in place. (see pic)

Make sure you’ve got the wiring correct and plug the harness in.

Test the lights and you’re done!
