Passat Syncro models, on which the rear wheels are also driven, need a more complex form of rear suspension.
Instead of the front-wheel-drive cars' torsion beam layout, they have a double-wishbone suspension mounted on an exceptionally strong sub-frame. The suspension struts are also upgraded, and the wheels located by upper and lower triangulated wishbones on each side. The driveline of the new Passat Syncro also incorporates an Electronic Differential Lock (EDL) to act as a starting aid when road conditions are poor. It operates by means of an ABS-controlled brake application. As soon as a difference in wheel speeds is detected as a result of one wheel having less grip than the others, the wheel with a tendency to spin is braked and the power redistributed to the wheels with better grip.

The Passat Syncro's dimensions vary only slightly, from the front-wheel-drive version. Height is up by three millimetres, and the rear track is narrower by the same amount. The wheelbase too is three millimetres shorter and despite a slight reduction in the height of the luggage compartment, its volume is still a useful 400 litres.

Interior
The Passat V6 Syncro has an interior that can only be described as luxurious. The interior has a walnut finish and leather seats come as standard, as does the leather steering wheel. For added comfort and convenience remote central locking, electric windows, an eight speaker 6 stacker CD system with tape deck and climate control air conditioning are standard items of equipment. In addition there is variable blue instrument illumination, an electronic fuel flap release and oil damped glove box, cup holders and grab handles.

Safety
Safety is an essential consideration in any Volkswagen product and nowhere is this more evident than on the Passat V6 Syncro. Airbags for the driver and front-seat passenger are standard as are ABS brakes and Electronic Differential Lock (EDL). Height and reach adjustable steering column are further refinements in the standard equipment package.
The Passat's full five seat capacity is confirmed by the fact that all five seats are fitted with headrests and three point seat belts, four of which are fitted with Volkswagen's pre-tensioner/belt limiter system. The Passat meets and beats all existing and all proposed safety legislation. For example it has three impact absorbing bars in each door, with impact absorbing foam filling the doors adding to the protection and, completing it, each bar locks into the frame to spread impact throughout the body shell. Similar dedication to safety is applied to every aspect of the Passat's design, from its obvious safety features, such as the twin air bags to the multitude of life saving design features that are the outcome of countless real and virtual crash tests.                           

All Passat models offer their owners peace of mind, from the inner profile-cut key locking system, free wheeling locks and standard immobiliser to the 100 percent galvanised bodywork, which entitles every Passat to a 12 year anti-perforation corrosion warranty.
