GONIOLITHON Foslie
G. byssoides (Lamarck) Foslie
(Nullipora trochanter Bory)
NOTE:The basionym Nullipora byssoides Lamarck (1801:374) is based on a Seba ('Locupletissimi rerum naturalium thesauri...', pl. 116, fig.7. 1758) illustration, cited in the protologue by Lamarck. This illustration shows typical features of this species, aiding identification, such as a compact thallus composed of dichotomously branched roundish (and not lamellate) branches. The Seba illustration, later included in most accounts of the species (see e.g. Areschoug in Agardh Sp. Alg. II.:522. 1852), is the unequivocal lectotype of Goniolithon byssoides.

L. dentatum (Kuetzing) Foslie
(? L. agariciforme (Pallas) Falkenberg)
L. lichenoides (Philippi) Foslie
(L. tortuosum (Esper) Foslie sensu Lemoine)
NOTE:A previous 'lectotypification' of Nullipora byssoides Lamarck (= Goniolithon byssoides) with Millepora byssoides Lamarck var. pulvinata (= L. lichenoides) is not effective for reasons explained under the entry of Goniolithon byssoides.
L. incrustans Philippi
L. racemus (Lamarck) Foslie
L. stictaeforme (Areschoug) Hauck (Athanasiadis 1999b)
(L. expansum sensu Lemoine)
? L. subtenellum (Foslie) Foslie
NOTE:The type is apparently representative of L. orbiculatum (Foslie) Foslie, while older Mediterranean records can be based on Hydrolithon samoense (Foslie) Keats et Chamberlain (Irvine & Chamberlain 1994:127)

P. fragile Kuetzing
P. caulerpae (Foslie) Jones et Woelkerling
P. zonale (Crouan frat.) Chamberlain
SPONGITIS Kuetzing
NOTE:After the Greek feminine noun spongitis (of stone or herb; see Liddell & Scott 'Greek-English Lexicon':1628. 1968), and not the masculine noun spongites [sponge-like (see Liddell & Scott l.c.)]. The first etymology is certain because it was later explained by Kuetzing (in Phycologia germanica:296. 1845, 'Steintang'), who also adopted consistently femine gender for all species of this genus throughout his publications (see Phycologia generalis, Phycologia germanica, Species Algarum, etc). Hence the orthography of the generic name should be corrected to Spongitis (Art. 60.1, 60.2); avoiding also confusion with the masculine noun spongites that is used as an epithet of species names in zoology (e.g. Cellepora spongites Linne, Eschara spongites Pallas, and Millepora spongites Linne).
