They won the Munster (one of four Irish provinces) under-18 title with Tom as captain before he left to work in England. He was signed by the Villa after a scout saw him playing in a park in Birmingham. After he left Aston Villa he played for Rugby Town. He also played Gaelic football and hurling for a GAA team called John Mitchell's in Warwickshire after his time with the Villa and for Warwickshire in the Junior All-Ireland hurling final.
