Temples and Mosques

In Phuket there are today (2005) 42 Buddhist Temples (Wat) and about the same number of Muslim Mosques. The relationship between Buddhists and Muslims is, however, about 7:3. They are living in a peaceful tolerant mind toward eachother. There are also many Chinese Temples (Shrines) in Phuket. These Shrines do not contain any Buddha pictures but many Gods of various kinds. The vegetarian festival in October is concentrated very much around these shrines.

When visiting a Buddhist temple you may meet a monk. He might bless you and give you a good luck charm in the form of a string tied around your wrist, which is believed to protect you from injury and illness:

15 of the 42 temples are caring for stray dogs. In these temples they get food and treatment from monks, volonteers, government and help organizations (mainly from SDF = Soi Dog Foundation and PAW = Phuket Animal Welfare Society). Once I tried to enter such a place in Wat Ta Rua, but I realized that I would be dog food if I continued. Now this temple have no dogs anymore.

Some of the temples are running schools, where the monks are making a considerable contribution on an idealistic basis.
