Coral Island

Next after Bon Island is this the most accessible island for diving and snorkelling but also for just swimming. Some time ago I thought the water here always is clear until one day when I came to this Island and the water was like a porridge. Full of small molluscs. At the shore this porridge was washed up and looked like a jelly. Not funny at all.

According to the name there are beautiful nice reefs and fishes to look at. The beautiful starfish above is, however, something you should keep at a distance. It is a 'Crown of Thorn' and its thorns are very venomous. It is also dangerous to the coral reefs if in great number.

Cheapest transport to Coral Island is by long tail-boat from Rawai Beach .

Far outside Coral Island is

Raya Island

Even that island is accessible by long tail-boat if time is in abundance. A speedboat from Chalong Bay is, however, to be recommended. It is a little bit better than Coral Island and especially its restaurant is better.

Left: I have just returned from free diving and left aside weight belt, diving mask, snorkel and fins. All these things you need for good free diving. Without weights is it for most people very difficult to defy the buoyancy in salt water. The clothes are also necessary to protect against the sun, which in the water is very strong. Even with these very flimsy material you get sun tan enough. Right: The nice restaurant.
