MAKE YOUR OWN LEAD ROPE

It is not all that difficult to make your own lead rope - so why not try it?

The only materials needed are:

* A rope of suitable length and material (preferably cotton since this will not risk "burning" you or your horse if you should get stuck in it)

* A snap of the type you prefer

Different snaps are available at most equine tack shops, gas stations, boat accessory shops etc. What you choose is a matter of taste and price. Make sure to pick a snap of a size that will stand the weight of a horse.

How to do:

Slip one end of the rope through the snap, make a loop and fasten it by splicing the ends tightly in to the rope. It will take some practice to make the result look good. A description with pictures and text can be found here.

Teach yourself to tie your horse using a knot that is strong but still fast to undo should it be needed. Follow this link.

When you feel ready for greater challanges you can try making your own rope halter. Follow this link for a detailed description.

This type of halter can be made by 6mm or 8mm climbing rope.

NOTE! This type of halter should NEVER be left on the horse in the field etc. due to the risk of it hurting itself (if getting caught with a leg in the halter or getting stuck somewhere).

Another type of rope halter, this one from Australia, you can find a detailed description for if you follow this link.
