The scale for Marks in Icelandic Horse Competitions

(As described for "Gaedingakeppni"competitons at Landsmót 1990)

 The Outside of Horse

is good for the Inside of Man

WALK

The walk is a four-beated relaxing gate with no gliding. The gait is pure when it has steady and even beats. The horse should hold its head in average position, not high and yet not very low. Riders should show the walk about 40 meters.

Mark

10 - 9 The horse walks with a soft body, and is steady and even. Movements are brisk and ample, indicating good will.

9 - 8 The gait is pure and movements are firm, but bearing is not as graceful as for the marks 10 - 9.

8 - 7 The walk is even beated but lacks briskness.

7 - 6 Uneven beat or short movements.

6 - 5,5 Very short movements.

5,5 - 5 The horse does not walk.

TROT

The trot is a rather rough two-beated gate. The horse glides between beats and the tempo is medium. The gait is pure when deviation from two beats in one stride can not be recognized. The horse has to trot at least 20 meters in order to be graded, and one half of the track to get average marks or higher.

Mark

10 - 9 The horse trots briskly with big gliding steps. The trot is steady, pure and elastic. The horse is in balancewith harmony in movements.

9 - 8 Gliding and elastic movements. Pure and steady trot, but bearing is not as graceful as for the mark 10 - 9.

8 - 7 The trot is pure, but lacks balanceand brisk movements, the horse does not glide enough.

7 - 6 The trot is uneven, shoe hittinga Or: Does not want to trot but trots well a short distance.

6 - 5,5 The horse trots only a short distance, changes gaits. Or: The trot is short without softness and elasticity.

5,5 - 5 The horse does not trot (at least 20 meters).

TOELT

The toelt is a soft, elastic, medium tempo gait with four beats in one stride. The horse holds its head high and moves with collected body. The gait is pure when it has even four beats in one stride. The horse has to toelt at least one half of the track to get average marks or higher.

Mark

10 - 9 The horse starts to toelt softly from walking tempo, and ends the toelt by softly slowing down to walking tempo again. Nice speed changes are asked for. Toelt movements are high, light, pure and graceful with elastic softness.

9 - 8 Gait quality same as for mark 10 - 9, but speed changes not as good and movements not as showy.

8 - 7 The gait is pure but lacks elasticity and high movements.

7 - 6 The beat is uneven and the toelt lacks energy.

6 - 5,5 Lack of energy, uneven and short toelt.

5,5 - 5 The horse does not toelt.

FAST TOELT

Fast toelt has the same definition as toelt, but more speed is required. The horse has to toelt above medium tempo to get average marks or higher.

Mark

10 - 9 The speed is not less than fast trot. Movements are strong and brisk. Strong elastic movements with even beat.

9 - 8 Same as for mark 10 - 9, but not as graceful bearing.

8 - 7 Fast toelt, even beated with energy, but movements lack elastic softness.

7 - 6 Fast toelt with uneven beat, or not fast toelt.

6 - 5,5 The toelt lacks energy, uneven beat, false steps.

5,5 - 5 The horse does not toelt.

CANTER

Canter is a brisk speeding gait with gliding. The gait can vary from slow three beated canter to very sharp flying canter with four beats in one stride. The gait is pure in these variations. The gait is not pure when the horse takes false canter (the hoofs strike the ground in wrong order). The right foreleg sequence in false canter is right hind leg, left side (left hind and left foreleg together), right foreleg. The horse has to canter at least one half the lenght of the track in order to get average marks or higher.

Mark

10 - 9 The horse takes the canter softly and then canters with sharp balanced and gliding movements. The horse slows down without stiffness.

9 - 8 Sharp balanced canter with good suspension period but bearing not as forceful as for mark 10 - 9.

8 - 7 Pure gait but lacks somewhat brisk gliding movements.

7 - 6 Lack of balance or the horse has difficulties taking the canter. Or: Short movements without sharpness.

6 - 5,5 Heavy canter, stiff body movements. The horse walks with hind legs, no gliding..The horse changes gaits unexpectedly.

5,5 - 5 False canter, or the horse does not canter.

PACE

Pace is a forceful two beated speeding gait where each side moves together with great extension. The gait is pure when the horse extends itself with good gliding, and deviation from two beats in one stride can hardly be recognized. In order to get average marks or more the horse has to pace purely at least 100 meters.

Mark

10 - 9 The horse takes flying pace from fast canter and paces with great sharpness without mistake at least 100 m. The gait is pure. The change from canter to pace is soft and the horse finishes the pace in balance.

9 - 8 Same as above, but the horse takes flying pace from either trot or toelt. Or: The horse takes pace from fast canter, but the pace lacks sharpness.

8 - 7 The pace is good but lacks power. Or: Paces sharply short distances.

7 - 6 The gait is not pure, the horse mixes gaits. Or: The horse paces very short distance.

6 - 5,5 The horse paces without energy. Or: The beat is uneven.

5,5 - 5 The horse does not pace.

FORM UNDER RIDER

When form under rider is judged, conformation, bearing of body and head, and coordination between rider and horse is accounted for. Every part of the show is viewed in this regard.

Mark

10 - 9 Conformation is beautiful, movements are light with harmony and balance. Bearing of head and tail is free and as high as conformation allows. Rider and horse act in harmony.

9 - 8 Same as above, but bearing not as graceful.

8 - 7 Not as beautiful conformation required as for marks 10 - 8, but full harmony in movements. Bearing of head and tail is free.

7 - 6 Bearing of head and/or tail not good. Conformation and movements unbalanced. Or: No harmony between horse and rider.

6 - 5,5 Conformation not good. Movements are stiff, lacking softness and elasticity.

5,5 - 5 Lowest grade.

WILL

Here the judge is trying to value the horse's temper and mind. Spirit, courage, obedience and sharpness in the gaits are important factors. When judged by sight the total show is a basis for judgement.

Mark

10 - 9 The will is awake, steady and light. the horse is constantly prepared to sreve the rider. The horse is running with delight.

9 - 8 Same as above, but a little less spirit.

8 - 7 High spirit, but cold temper. Or: Spirit is not high, yet energetic movements.

7 - 6 Not good will, the horse does not move actively.

6 - 5,5 Low spirit, the horse is not interested, even stubborn.

5,5 - 5 Lazy, stiff body, stubborn.
