Less is more - say no to fat books!

The covers of this book are too far apart.
- Ambrose Bierce (1842-1914?)

Novels keep getting fatter and fatter, but they get no better because of that. Some say they get worse, but I'm not so sure about that either. Maybe they just get different, wordy instead of terse. Some of us like them that way, some of us don't. What I do know, however, is that it takes more time to read a fat book than a thin one. This means that, as books get fatter, I get to read fewer books. I get to sample fewer authors.

It's time to do something about that. I much prefer to get to read more books, because that means that in the long run, I will have read more good books. And since I don't think a 900 page novel on an average is any better than a 300 page novel, the choice is easy: Say no to fat books! The world overflows with good books; for every good fat book you refuse to pick up, you can read two or three at least as good, but thinner, books instead.

Join the campaign to make more room for thinner books in the bookshops, especially in the genres of fantasy, science fiction, thrillers, and horror. Stop buying books that are longer than 400 pages and paste the following html snippet onto your web pages:
