Orchids

Orchids are fascinating plants. There's an incredible variation of species and variants. These plants have a fantastic biology and an amazing ecological function and have proven to be survival experts. Man have long been exalted about these cool plants.

More and more people find an interest in keeping orchids at home. The orchids are more easily available than ever.

The Project

Micropropagation is methods of culturing plants from cells, derived from seed or explants. It's commonly done in a laboratory and the methods involve working in sterile environments with entirely axenic cultures (axenic = without the presence of unwanted organisms). A large amount of plants can quickly and efficiently be grown from cloned cells. Sensitive species that have certain very specific requirements must sometimes be cultured.

It's however not critical to have access to a clean laboratory and much of any special equipment. With a bit of planning and a bit of luck one can succeed at home! Everything needed can be ordered over internet or be bought in the grocery store, at the chemist's, or in a variety of other places. Many plants can be cultures without synthetically derived hormones and other 'hard to get' or simply expensive chemicals. Orchids are however somewhat more difficult to succeed with.
