Intervju - Doro Pesch, Doro / ex Warlock

Vi fick en liten pratstund med Doro efter hennes konsert på Sweden Rock Festival 2002.

You are about to release a new album, in august, its called Fight. What can you tell us about it?

Doro: We just got it done, one week before the Swedish Rock Festival, I'm super exited about it because we're all very happy about it. The album has a lot of energy in it and its all played live by the band. Not much technical shit going on, I think its really raw. We have a nice duet on the record with Pete Steel from Type O Negative and I think it sounds really cool, the guitars are tuned down and the song is like dark...

Is it a ballad?

D: No, no, its like heavy mid tempo, not doom its just dark and its called Descent. There are mainly heavy songs on the record. Three ballads and I had a couple of guest musicians; the guitar player of Savatage ChrisCaffery, he played a couple of solos, beautiful, and Jean Beauvoir played a few things. You remember the guitar player from the Plasmatic with the big mohawk. I wrote one song with Russ Ballard, he did "God gave rock and roll to you", so I'm very happy with the album and I hope the fans will love it. And one of the two new songs we played today were "Fight", which is like an anthem for a friend who is a boxer; Regina Hallmich. I think she is like twenty times champion in the lightweight and she used "All we are" a couple of times like an anthem when she went into the ring. So one time she said that it would be great if you could write another anthem for us, so we had two songs in the making, "Fight" and "Always live to win". And at first she picked "Always live to win" but I thought that the darker one would be better so she picked "Fight" for her anthem.

What did you think of the show today?

D: I was totally satisfied, my musicians and everybody loved it. The reactions were fantastic. We haven't played here in so many years and it was such a warm welcome.

When was the last time you were here?

D: We did a tour of our own, I think it was in 1989, that was the last time. The mid nineties were hard, it wasn't easy the play heavy metal then. But I'm really glad to be back here. I loved the show, but how did you like it?

It was great. Are there any other bands on this festival that you're gonna see?

D: Yeah! Definitely Rob Halford.

Are you leaving tonight or tomorrow?

D: We are playing The Gods of Metal so we have to leave tonight. We´d love to stay but it's impossible. But I really want to see Virgin Steele, we're together in the bus so I definitely gonna see them and Rob Halford. I'm a big Judas Priest fan.

What do you think of Judas Priest today, without Rob?

D: I must say that their new singer is doing a great job, but it's hard to say, of course I like Rob Halford so much. It's different, but I think the new singer is doing an excellent job.

You said you had a lot of guests on the new album and you yourself sang on the new UDO album Man or Machine. Was that your idea?

D: Actually Udo called. I was doing the new album in Pennsylvania and I got a phonecall and the receptionist said that there was someone from Germany who had called me and his name was Udo Dirksnider, and I said are you sure? And there were a number so I called and he told me about the idea and that he had a song. When I came back to Germany I went to the studio, listen to the song "Dancing with an angel" and I thought well, I could try it. So we did it.

What do you think of the result, are you satisfied?

D: Yeah. And I think Udo is as well.

Are you a friend of his?

D: Actually we first met a couple of years ago. We always knew of each other and always said hi when we met on the shows backstage, we are not the closest of friends. The studio work together was great. Maybe we do something more together like a tour or something in the future. Maybe a tour of Russia.

What do you think of the heavy metal scene in Germany right now, there are a lot of bands coming from Germany that are great.

D: Which ones do you like?

Freedom Call, Gamma Ray, Edguy, Avantasia...

D: I think the climate for heavy metal is super great right now, much better than the nineties. There are great festivals like this one, I think heavy metal is coming strong right now.

What is your favorite German band, except for Doro?

D: Since we usually are like friends its hard to say but I mean I was a big Accept fan and I think UDO:s new album is great, Edguy, Gamma Ray and Rammstein. They have such a fantastic shows. We went on promotion tour in 1995 when the first album wasn't even out. What a show, the singer set himself on fire. That's real dedication. I must say Rammstein, I think they're great. There are certainly some bands that I have forgot who will be pissed.

What do you think of Sweden?

D: It's beautiful, the landscape is massive. We only got here yesterday but so far the festival has been great, and I hope we can come back more often on the next tour. Probably in October.

What is your best and worst concert memory during the years?

D: In the beginning of Warlock we played one New years eve in Luxenburg. When we got there and when we went into the club I saw this poster and it said: Tonight: Warlock dancing band. It was fucking unbelievable, nobody knew that we were heavy metal, and 50-year-old people came. And at ten o clock nobody was there, at eleven nobody and at twelve o clock we started and there were like 12 people. It was funny but it was the worst. But we did the best of it, we still played "Burning the witches". One of the best moments was definitely Monsters of Rock at Donnington in 1986. It was the first time in England and to be playing in front of so many people. That gave us a big break. In those days you had to make it in England before you could even think of doing America.

Germany is the big heavy metal country today.

D: Yeah, but in those days it were different rules. We had to prove ourselves.

You mentioned Accept as one of your favorite bands, they did a reunion a couple of years back, what are the chances of a reunion with Warlock?

D: For the moment it is up in the air, the rights of the name got taken away by our manager back then and we went to court and we fucking lost. So that's the reason we renamed ourselves, I never intended to make a solocareer. So its gonna be a little difficult to do a reunion, but we'll see. We are not working on it.

If a new fan discover Doro and he/she only have got money to buy one album. Which one would you recommend him to buy?

D: "Triumph and Agony".

Why?

D: Not because it sold the most, it was so special. It had great songs and I have a lot of memories of that one. I love the artwork, the painting and stuff, and by the way the same guy paints the new album. And I love to say the new one as well.

What are you all time favorite albums by other artists?

D: "Kill 'em all" by Metallica, "Highway to hell" by AC/DC, "Wish you were here" by Pink Floyd, "Alive II" by Kiss and "Herzleid" by Rammstein.

Ok, thanks for the time.

D: Thank you.
