Intervju - Jeff Pilson, ex Dokken

1. What are you up to right now?

My Underground Moon CD is coming out next month in Japan and Feb. 18th in Europe. Hopefully I'll tour that next year. I just got done doing a new War and Peace song for a tribute record for the people of NYC, that comes out next year. It's very cool. It's a Dokken-ish song that came out great, with Alex Masi playing the solo. I think I'd like to somehow release that through my website so fans can hear it. Then I'm working on the ZuZu Ltd. project with my partner Tommy- that's turning out amazing. It's very edgy pop music. We're also producing a lot of other artists as well. That with promoting the Rockstar flick has been keeping me real busy!

2. Tell us about

Your soloalbum

There really is no solo record, unless you call the War and Peace Cd which came out recently a solo record. I did play everything but the solos, but it's not musically what I'd do for a solo record. Underground Moon is definetly a collaboration with Tommy, and I'd like it to be a band live.

The coming Dokken album

As far as the Dokken album, I just read on the Dokken website yesterday that Barry Sparks is playing bass on that, so I don't know what to say. I only heard two songs a couple months ago, and they were very unfinished. I'm assuming the material I've been writing is no longer in contention.

The "Rock Star" movie

The movie was a great experience, I played the bass player in Steel Dragon [the band Mark Wahlberg ends up joining].

3. Swedish guitarphantom John Norum is the new guitarplayer in Dokken. What was your reaction when Reb left Dokken and what do you have to say about John?

I was tremendously sad when Reb left, although I understood. He was an invaluable addition to the last two Dokken records, his writing and playing, as well as personality and professionalism, will be sorely missed. But it looks like I'm out of the picture now as well, from what I'm reading on the website. It seems that Dokken is no longer a band, more like Don's solo group. I'm sure they'll still make some great music. John is a fabulous player, but I've had little experience writing with him. I know he's a great guy, and works his balls off. Should be good.

4. What is your best/worst memory with Dokken?

Best memory was the Aerosmith tour of 1988. Worst was the last run with George in the fall of 97. Things had really deteriorated by that point, not that it was all George to blame, though.

5. What band have been the most fun to tour with? And worst?

Best was a toss up of Dio and Aerosmith. Both bands and crews got along so well, we had tons of fun.

The worst, as far as fun goes, was probably Triumph in 85. I don't think they much cared for us!

6. The 1988 Eurotour turned out to be a total fiasko for Dokken, why?

Because Don had already told everyone he was leaving the band, so morale was at its lowest point ever. It was a big excuse for certain people to simply give up!

7. After the Washington DC gig on the "Monsters of rock" tour in US ´88 Metal Hammer wrote this about Dokken: "...it was far from boring in their dressingroom! The groupies had by now appeared in force and were busy lavishing attention on the band... These girls were willing to do it five times or with five guys or in five different ways! In the middle of it all was Kirk Hammett busying himself over a documentary, filming everything in sight... Kirk nearly got involved in a brawl as he nudged a door which slammed into a part of a Dokken member which wasn´t asleep!" Comments.

No denials here!

8. Which record, of all the ones you've played on, are you most proud?

Well probably the Underground Moon CD coming out soon. It's the best songs I've ever been part of, and I love the vibe and sound of the record. I also think it will stay fresh a very long time.

9. What is your opinion about George Lynch´s work since he left Dokken?

The first Lynch Mob record was awesome, truly inspired. The second was good, but not as. His solo record was too disjointed, and his records since seem a bit contrived and passionless. But I think he has the ability to come back with something mind-blowing, if he gets his fire back.

10. Who would feature in your ultimate supergroup line-up?

Ray Luzier on drums, Al and Scott from a group called Omniblank on guitars, Vinny Cole on keys, not sure of bass- I'd sing!

11. Have you read the Motley Crue biography "The Dirt"? Comments.

Haven't read it yet.

12. You didn´t come and play the Sweden Rock Festival this summer with Dokken due to other engagements. When can we expect to see you and Dokken back in Sweden again?

Not sure of Dokken, hopefully UM will play there next year!

13. Any message to your Swedish fans?

Sorry I wasn't at the SRF, but Don confirmed the gig before he knew I had other commitments. But thanx for all the support over the years, and hope you dig the UM CD, I'm so excited I wanna freak!!! See Ya Soon!
